Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Large baking dish (9×13 inches works great)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground beef lean
  • 1 medium Onion chopped
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 2 cans 10 oz each Cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese shredded
  • 32 oz Tater tots
  • To taste Salt
  • To taste Pepper

Instructions

Preparation of the Meat Layer

  • In your skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat until it’s nicely cooked. Add the chopped onion halfway through and cook until soft.
  • Drain any excess fat and stir in garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Remove from heat and mix in the cream of mushroom soup and sour cream until well combined.

Assembling the Casserole

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Spread the beef mixture evenly at the bottom of your greased baking dish.
  • Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef.
  • Arrange the tater tots neatly on top, covering the cheese.

Baking the Casserole

  • Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  • Take out the casserole and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. This helps everything set up nicely.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, consider using low-fat versions of sour cream and cream of mushroom soup.
  • Feel free to add a layer of mixed vegetables between the beef and cheese for a balanced meal.
  • If you like a bit of a kick, a dash of paprika or chili powder goes wonderfully with this dish.
